4 Health Tips to Survive the Summer Heat In Japan

The heat of the summertime in Japan can potentially hurt you, or anyone, very seriously – that’s why  it is important for you to know what to do, especially how to survive the heat.

With the exception of Hokkaido, summer in Japan is very dry and, for the most part, exhausting – yes, the heat alone can exhaust you. If you are planning on flying to Japan during the summertime, it would be best to prepare for the heat – or it might overwhelm you, or worse.

Health Tips to Survive Summer in Japan

Let’s face it. The best time to visit Japan is during the summertime. Japan’s summer brings out the best of Japan – its people, food, festivities, and places to go. Don’t let the heat stop you from enjoying all that – here’s my Summertime-in-Japan Survival Tips.

Survival Tip # 1: Rehydrate

Dehydration is a real killer during summertime anywhere, especially in Japan. Drinking water can prolong your: 1) length of time to enjoy the people, festivities, and whatnot. 2) kidney because water makes its job easier. 3) your health, overall.

Also, you will sweat like crazy. So, replacing those liquids is essential.

Survival Tip # 2: Stay Clean

With excessive heat comes sweat. And, if you’re not accustomed to the heat, then expect to sweat as though you’re running on a treadmill. Also, sweat, while being absolutely healthy for us, when it’s unmanaged, it causes body odor. The more excessive the sweat, the funkier the smell.

If you wish to be courteous with locals, you want to have almost no smell. The best way to manage your sweat is by taking a bath. If you’re on a long trip, take extra shirts (plural) and face towels with you and stay fresh by wiping your sweat and changing your shirt from time to time.

Survival Tip # 3: Hand Fan

The heat can be suffocating at times – you’ll want to bring your AC, or at least an electric fan. But, where’s the fun in that? You’re here to enjoy Japan, but if the summer heat gets too much, your best bet is to bring a hand fan. You can get a Japanese hand fan – they are easy to use, lightweight and can easily be stored in a backpack. It might not get you as much comfort as with an AC in front of you. But, the comfort it brings plus the ability to enjoy the places, food, and people during summertime in Japan – priceless!

Survival Tip # 4: Wear Light & Loose Fitting Clothes

If you’re here for business reasons, you don’t want to roam around with a full-on coat-and-tie. You want to be able to breathe as much as possible and you want the air to flow around your body. Button-down shirts are your best bet. If you’re here to enjoy Japan at its peak beauty, then wear shorts and t-shirts. For women, my advice is to wear long sleeved shirts to cover as much skin to prevent sunburn. You’ll want to wear casual pants, and probably refrain from wearing jeans though shorts are just fine. If you want to wear something with a more japanese vibe, try a yukata – it’s light, loose, and perfectly made for the weather.

Conclusion

There are other things you want to do to increase your survival rate and length of time to enjoy Japan in its perfect beauty. Giving yourself plenty of rest, walking slowly, using an umbrella, and using hats and sunglasses are a few of them. It’s easy to get lost in the beauty of Japan during the summertime. There’s a lot of people outside, tons of festivities, and places to go. While being human means we have a responsibility to take care of our body, don’t forget to have fun.
