4 Things To Do That Will Save Your Life in Case a Huge Earthquake hits Japan

If you haven’t experienced earthquakes or you rarely do in your country, then you’ll find yourself getting used to it when living in Japan. Way back in 2011, the Tohoku Earthquake hit, also known as the Great East Japan Earthquake with a devastatingly 9.1 magnitude. With that being said, being prepared anytime would save you and your family.

Things to do when a huge earthquake hits Japan

Often when earthquakes happen, a lot of people realize how unprepared they were and they did not even have plans on what to do, not to mention plans for survival. For you to be prepared, do these 4 things to be safe as possible in case of an earthquake.

1. Emergency Bag

You may have heard this several times but only when an earthquake happens do you realize how important it is. Prepare an emergency bag when you need to evacuate your home since you cannot bring everything with you. If you need something else other than your bag, place it immediately inside and leave as fast as possible. Inside your bag there should be a first aid kit, your prescription medicines, water, emergency food, portable radio, batteries, cash, work gloves, flashlight, swiss army knife, blanket, sleeping bag, portable stove and your hanko.

2. Disaster Map

Every prefecture in Japan has disaster prevention maps you can go to. Check your prefecture’s official website with information such as shelters, evacuation areas, water supply, stay facilities, etc. Also, you can ask for a disaster prevention pamphlet by visiting your city ward office.

3. Check positions of your furniture

The least you want to happen while hiding in safety at your home during an earthquake is when a large piece of furniture falls on you. It could happen in the least time we expected and even at midnight when everyone else is asleep. It’s important to secure your furniture like closets and cabinets by bolting them in the door or walls. Large appliances like fridges should have a door stopper if bolting is not possible. Also, be mindful of the positions of the furniture and things at home, especially glass items.

4. Expect and prepare for the worst

If you managed to survive during a strong earthquake just at home, you can imagine the worst like blackouts and water outages. If it may or may not happen, preparing for it will give you peace of mind that you can survive for a period of days while waiting for the authorities’ announcement and rescue. Stock up some emergency food and liters of water at home. Also prepare extra blankets, clothes, and other essential things like emergency light, batteries, etc.

Conclusion

Earthquakes are frightening. We may not be able to tell when it hits but doing our best from it such as being prepared and knowing what to act or do will keep us in our state of mind and ease. With all of these things to do in the article, I hope you will be safe and ready once an earthquake hits. And don’t panic and focus on the things you need to do. What was your experience from an earthquake?
