Igusa: the New Superfood in Japan

You probably heard of the tatami mat. Yes, you can eat that! Are you excited to know what it is? Then keep reading this article.

Igusa is the new Superfood In Japan

It may come across as weird or even bizarre but the tatami mat is made from igusa or soft rush, a flowering plant that resembles grasses. And, apparently, igusa is probably one of the best superfoods out there in Japan that you need to know and try – here’s why.

1. High Fiber Content

The igusa has approximately 77.6 grams of fiber out of 100g. That’s 77.60%! Compare that to the banana which has 2.6 grams of fiber per 100g and you have a clear winner.

The fiber content is astronomical compared to regular foods. And, if we talk about fiber there are tons of positive effects of having a high fiber diet ~ weight loss, regular bowel movements to mention a few.

2. Anti Bacterial Action

When applied to food, it basically helps keep the food fresh for longer.

According to studies where they compared two cakes: 1) one with igusa added, 2) one without igusa. They kept both cakes preserved for 3 days at 30 degrees celsius. Findings show that there are two times more bacteria found in the cake with no igusa added when compared to the cake with igusa added.

3. Cure Inflammation

Traditionally, it’s been known to cure inflammation.

Clinical trials compare igusa with matcha, also a known herb to cure inflammation. What they’ve found are identical results with both of them inhibiting the anti-inflammatory polyphenol EGCG, which can help cure inflammation.

4. Sugar Substitute

Yes it is sweet, or at least a sweetening effect.

You see, it has this “masking effect” against bitterness. So, if your tea has become too bitter, you can count on igusa to help it and make the bitterness go away, or at least make it bearable.

Conclusion

There are other benefits to igusa aside from these top 4 nitpicks above. It is known to reduce blood pressure and it doesn’t even need chemical fertilizers in its whole production. Amazing right?

Knowing about this surprising superfood, what do you think of igusa?
